"CHARLESTON, S.C. — Though Hurricane Joaquin continued its path well clear of the United States mainland on Saturday, heavy rains from a separate storm system knocked out power to thousands of homes along the East Coast and triggered flash flooding in South Carolina. The authorities in that state were preparing for more life-threatening trouble as muscular northeast winds were expected to create abnormally high tides."
