Southwest Airlines starts service at Chicago's O'Hare Airport

Southwest Airlines began flying out of O'Hare International Airport for the first time on Sunday.

The Dallas-based carrier (NYSE: LUV) has been flying out of Midway Airport in Chicago for the past 35 years. O'Hare flights are new to the airline.

Southwest said it will operate daily flights from O'Hare, operating out of three gates in Terminal 5, to Nashville, Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, and Baltimore/Washington, D.C.

Southwest, which announced the new O'Hare flights back in October, currently flies to more than 60 U.S. destinations out of Midway Airport. The airline said it employs 4,800 people at Midway Airport and the airport is one of its busiest U.S. hubs.

"O’Hare’s service will complement existing Midway Airport operations where Southwest offers up to nearly 250 departures a day during peak seasons to 70 destinations nonstop," Southwest said in a statement.

The airline initially said it would offer 20 daily flights out of O'Hare Airport when it announced the new service. But the Chicago Tribune reported that Southwest has cut that number back to 16 daily flights, and it also reported that Southwest's presence at O'Hare could bring down some air fares, and added that O'Hare nonstop flights to Orlando, Florida are planned to begin on Saturdays in March.
