I am watching these New Yorker magazine videos.
My first reaction is that this could happen to any one of us. Then more thoughts come in.
Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" comes to mind. Human experiences are unique. At this very moment, there are millions of us without what they used to have. Think of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Think of Syrians after the collapse of the last five years.
Unfortunately not all of this is far from me.
Not that relatives or friends are in the condition described in the videos. What bothers me is that I see the inhumanity that some public figures openly embrace.
Masha Gessen was talking on the radio about her book 'The Future is History". She believes that Russia is going through a Totalitarian Stage with Vladimir Putin. She is not a fan of this macho man, she is lesbian and had to flee her country, she wasn't welcome there. Nevertheless I see her point. Totalitarianism is a man thing.
Nevertheless Pinochet, Franco, and Hitler, are not in charge anymore. Their methods don't really work in Chile, Spain, and Germany anymore.
The work done by the staff of The New Yorker, is defending us.
Take care.
