US and EU: A Tale of Two Countries
Recently I've written on the decline of the west, and even predicted that Brazil will take over.
Obviously I am not a foreign policy expert. Brazil, does not even officially have nuclear bombs, and the European Union is not dead yet. Red Ed (pictured above) is not about to let England go the kookoo way of the Tea Party across the Atlantic, in what I consider the same Anglo Saxon country that spans both oceans. Culturally the identification is so deep that British lads were willing to give their blood for the ill-conceived attack to the Arab World, by W.

The future of Unix is full of difficult problems. Would we truly want it any other way?
For more than thirty years we have thrived on challenges. We pioneered the best practices of software engineering. We created today's Internet and Web. We have built the largest, most complex, and most reliable software systems ever to exist. We outlasted the IBM monopoly and we're making a run against the Microsoft monopoly that is good enough to deeply frighten it.
Not that everything has been triumph by any means. In the 1980s we nearly destroyed ourselves by acceding to the proprietary capture of Unix. We neglected the low end, the nontechnical end users, for far too long and thereby left Microsoft an opening to grossly lower the quality standards of software. Intelligent observers have pronounced our technology, our community, and our values to be dead any number of times.
But always we have come storming back. We make mistakes, but we learn from our mistakes. We have transmitted our culture across generations; we have absorbed much of what was best from the early academic hackers and the ARPANET experimenters and the microcomputer enthusiasts and a number of other cultures. The open-source movement has resurrected the vigor and idealism of our early years, and today we are stronger and more numerous than we have ever been.
So far, betting against the Unix hackers has always been short-term smart but long-term stupid. We can prevail — if we choose to.''

I was lucky enough to be at the Lucent Technologies Software Symposium in Naperville, where esr spoke to David Korn about this project. I was hosting Eric, and it was great to see these to greats talking to each other.

Science has to be predictive. If it can't, it is not science. Politics therefore is not science, nevertheless that does not mean that assuming politicians do something, we cannot know what will happen. This is scenario running, and huge computers are good for that.

Today I met a Beautiful Girl [:( & :) = Human Condition]
She is the daughter of an ex-Mayor of Huitzuco. My mother also was the Mayor's daughter from 1955 to 1956. This girl's father held that position from 1996 to 1999.
Like my mother she is beautiful.
I have a few things in my mind I write here.
This was a hectic day. I was told I'll be paid next pay day. We are paid every other week. I was not paid today. Luckily I have some money in the bank. My workmates are frantically filling formats to get research money. The Rector just announced the University does not have money to pay us in December. Ecuador police chief rebelled and was sacked.
I went to Huitzuco to teach a Mexican Economics class, you can read about that class in Spanish, here.
Who gets to be Mayor there, and what is going to happen to the town?
Like Secretary of Rumsfeld said, that is unknowable.
My grandpa was elected, and this girl's dad also was elected. What will happen to the town? Drug dealers are already moving in. There are decent people there and I hope the decent people win.
Can I be Mayor and smoke them out?
I'd like to :( & :) that is the human condition.
