SEOUL — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared “emergency martial law” on Tuesday evening, accusing the opposition of “antistate” activities for paralyzing the government with impeachment motions.

In a televised briefing, Yoon blamed the opposition party for “unprecedented” impeachment attempts of various government officials and cuts proposed for next year’s budget. He accused the opposition of sympathizing with North Korea in its attempts to block his administration.

It was not immediately clear how this decision would affect South Korea’s governance.

Yoon has been struggling with low approval ratings since taking office in 2022. He has also been facing mounting political backlash involving his wife and top officials from his ruling People Power Party.
