Allison Thompson Chapter 5 notes

What is light?
- Light is an electromagnetic wave.

**Photons: little pieces of light with precise wavelength, frequency, and energy. ***

What is matter?
- Matter is an atomic structure.

** Atomic Number = #of protons in nucleus**
** Atomic Mass Number = # of protons+ neutrons**
** Isotope: Same 3 of protons but different number of neutrons.**

How do light and matter interact?
- Emission, absorption, transmission, reflection, or scattering.

Chemical Finger prints
-Every atom, ion, and molecule has a unique spectral fingerprint.
-How we determine chemicals in gas

What are the three basic types of spectra?
-Continum, absorption, and emmission.

How does light tell us what things are made of?
- All electrons have distinct energy levels. As well as each chemical element, ion, and molecule have a unique energy level.

How does light tell us the temperature of planets and stars?
-By thermal radiation.

**Thermal Radiation depends on the property of the objects tempature.
** We glow, but you just can't see it.

How does light tell us the speed of a distant object?
-by the Doppler effect.

How do telescopes help us learn about the universe?
-Light collecting area and angular resolution.

Why do we put telescopes in space?
- So we do not run into light pollution, turbulence, and so it does not absorb UV rays.

How is technology revolutionalizing astronomy?
- adaptive optics and interferometry.
