Germán Martínez Hidalgo

My friend Germán Martínez passed away today.

I spent over ten years of my life in Puebla. I met good friends there. Some are dead, Luis Rivera Terrazas, Mario Albarrán, Jesús García Fernández, Alejandro Reyes Cristiani, Jesús Reyes Corona, and Rodolfo Reyes Sánchez "El Champion".

I hereby promise the world that I'll keep the flame of rationality alive.

We will remember all of them.

German Martínez Hidalgo, my "Tio German" was the person who introduced my mother (his cousin) to my father (his schoolmate and best friend), about 65 years ago back in Puebla. But mainly He was also the one who introduced me to the science of astronomy and the first to talk me in a very clear and understandable way about a genious named Einstein when I was a 7 year old curious kid in his family observatory at his house. "Mira esa es Venus... y este es Saturno con sua anillos". He said, when I took my first glance ever through his telescope. Fond memories from my childhood. Now he is up in the Sky where he could see the eternity, no telescopes needed. Rest in peace an be happy my good old "Tío German".

Thanks a lot Hiram for reading my blog. I went to Puebla this Saturday I came back on Sunday. I saw his wife and sons, they seem to be taking it well. He was one of the few people I met in my life that impressed me. I miss him.

TAMBIÉN TUVE EL PRIVILEGIO DE CONOCER AL DR. GERMÁN MARTÍNEZ HIDALGO.QUEDARÁ EN MI MEMORIA SU RECUERDO Y ELEVADA CONDICIÓN INTELECTUAL. EN ALGUNAS CONVERSACIONES QUE SOSTUVE CON ÉL QUEDE IMPRESIONADO POR LA SENCILLEZ CON LA QUE EXPLICABA TEMAS COMPLEJOS.

I used to read his column on mondays in "El Sol de Puebla" maybe He was a good astronomer, but lacked teaching skills, the column was about history on math, phisics, astronomy not observing the sky, I always wanted to complain on that but better quit reading the paper...
The planetarium was named after him today, don´t know if it´s deserved, but his name is on that place now...

Hello again. Yesterday we were at the inauguration of the German Martinez Hidalgo Memorial Monument in Puebla. It was great. Lot of people, family, government authorities and friends came by to hear about our "Tìo German" and even Silvia Pinal, the famous mexican actress, who was her cousin and my aunt indeed. We have a very nice day and the monument is beautiful. You should check it out with his family.
