After reading Why Nations Fail, I know. The reason is that the institutions in the South are more extractive. The tobacco plantations marked those people with sin. They brought African Slaves, and the Rest is History, as they say.
It does not surprise me that North Carolina is adamantly opposed to Same Sex Marriage.
What else is new?
