After reading Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner, it dawned on me: This is what Thomas Piketty means; Thomas Sutpen represents the blind force of capital accumulation (r in Piketty's notation), and Goodhue Coldfield the work force which really produces wealth (g in Piketty's notation). Obviously there is more in this Literature Nobel prize worthy novel, than mere economics, but in Capital in the Twenty First Century by Thomas Piketty, you find more than mere economics as well.
The semitropical southern part of the US needed slaves. After the Civil War, which the South fought fiercely, that type of human exploitation was not legal.
