Ken Ono: Fractals Everywhere

``In developing the P formula, the team first discovered the fractal nature of partition numbers, meaning that the sequences of integers begin to repeat at certain intervals.''

Deep Thoughts:

``Ono emphasized that the team’s discovery is the result of deep thought after many months of work. Although partition numbers seem to be completely chaotic without any structure, Ono said, the team has finally found a structure.

“We had to let go of what people had done in the past. We dispensed those ideas and started from scratch, thinking that maybe from a general theory, all the properties will be revealed. That, in fact, turned out to be the case,” Ono said.

Ono said he was excited to share his team’s findings at a conference last weekend.

“For most of us who work in this area, it is a time to celebrate ... We’ve solved questions that have been open for quite some time,” Ono said.

Ono said he hopes the team’s new theory will lead to action.

“There will be others who implement our theories on computer software, and there will be those who master it and apply it to more problems along the lines of this work,” he said. “We will have to sit down and think about where we want to place our efforts.”''
