Slow Change

In 1994 Mayans rebelled against the Mexican Government. I got really nervous, I had visions of Shining Path 's rage against all  the Spaniards like myself. I was wrong, the Indians were not ready to punish us. They were just getting ready.

Then sometime in May of this year, Indians spoke through some wealthy students at a Jesuit university in Mexico. Ibero. Maybe the students confronting Enrique Pena Nieto did not know it themselves, but Deep Mexico was speaking through them.

Indians were not ready then, they are ready now.

Let the show begin!

From the NYT:

"Cherán’s residents say they were inspired to push for autonomy by some notable precedents. In 1994, Subcommander Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista rebels, staged an uprising in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, demanding better treatment for the indigenous communities there, placing the issue on the national political agenda."
