The NYT is not a Mexico City newspaper. Few people in the US knew of the heroic struggle of Mexican Electric Workers.

They Won!

The NYT does care about Mexicans in the US.

Here you have something about a hunger strike by illegal Mexicans in the US.

These strike was three days long, the one in Mexico was a 90 days one. I guess if you are a Mexican and are in  Mexico legally, American don't care.
