I ask a question in this week's poll. Do you know the History of neighboring countries? It seems to me that A. O. Scott, the reviewer of Rudo y Cursi (below), does not know the History of Mexico. He doesn't have to, we live on a flat world as Tom Friedman says, so good products have to stand on their own feet to succeed. Globalization, right?
Up to a point.
When I was a student at California on the early seventies, I was impressed by the fact that so few Americans I met had been to Mexico. I cannot blame them for not wanting to go to the poor part of the "big village", we all live in now.
I don't like to be preachy, but you know; better know your neighbors, if you don't want surprises. We are more connected than some of us will want to accept.
Next time a pandemic threatens us all in this globalized world, you better know the History of your neighbors.
