I am in the middle of making Sugar on a Stick. I have my 2G stick stuck in there. I got stuck. Looking to fix my problem I saw this invitation to install Ubuntu 9.04, I accpeted. My computer is about to download the whole of the 1232 packages. It's been awhile, maybe two hours.
I am inspired to write this note (to make time).
Why do I need Sugar on a Stick?
As you can see from my tiny bio to the right, near my 10 year old picture -- I don't look like that anymore -- I am a Mathematics Education Professor. Why the Sugar then?
I want kids in Mexico to have a cheap hardware piece they can call their own to learn math. Fair enough.
How am I going to do that?
First I have to get more knowledgeable about open source, then I have to have some nice and useful tools so kids will like to use their stick.
You know, I was getting big bucks to write telephony software ksh scripts for Lucent Technologies, but something happened, they told me it wasn't my fault, and I was let go. I spent sometime in the States trying to find my place in the last years of the Bush administration. It did not stick. Nobody wanted a crazy scientist with ideas and no products to pay the bills. So I came back to my country trying to make it here instead.
I have the skills the talent and the knowledge to produce something for Mexican students.
I have to make life interesting, so I dedcided that Negroponte's One Laptop per Child was good, and I started to make conatcts here. I think that that process has not worked for me in Guerrero, there are other states in Mexico where it is happening. Also in Uruguay, Venezuela, and a host of other countries. But not in Chilpancingo.
Maybe the Sugar on a Stick will do it. Mostly though, I have to get to work.
I hope Ubuntu 9.04 gives me the push I need.

Sorry, should have put a link in to start with! the email list is pretty active and maybe more up to date. I think they are planning a report of work for the semester in the next few weeks.
