Over 600 Kids Leave Zihuatanejo

You can read in the NYT on the Obama-Duncan: Race to the Top, competition. If you follow my standards, then I give you money to improve kids qualifications, things like adding fractions with different denominators in fifth grade.

If you could read in Spanish, unfortunately that is not in the standards, you could read La Jornada Guerrero; and find out that over 600 kids leave middle school in Zihuatanejo, because their parents take them to the States.

There is something wrong with this picture: If Bill and Melinda Gates, who are partly paying for the Obama-Duncan plan, care for the kids. Does it make any difference if they stay in beautiful Zihuatanejo, or are taken to some rundown apartment somewhere in the rat holes where they send Mexicans in the States?

Grow up people. We are all descendants of Africans who left over a hundred thousand years ago their homeland to become us.

I guess, this is not going to happen. These kids are going to risk their lives and die in the Arizona desert, under the watchfull eyes of the Nazis.

The standards are not that great though, from the NYT link above:

``“Vocabulary-building in the common core is slower,” he said, citing one example. “And on the math side, they don’t prepare eighth-grade students for algebra one, which is the gateway to higher math.”
