This is not a deep analysis a là Kurzweil, but it is not dumb, I hope.
I wrote a note on Ubuntu 9.04 to express my awe at the speed by which open source developers are coming with new products. Here I write more about my impressions.
Right now I am writing this on draft.blogger.com . To tell you the truth I don't feel any difference with the previous Ubuntu 8.01 I had, nor with my fake Windows Angelical installation. I am on Firefox, and the environment I see is courtesy of the folks at blogger. Why should I pay MS any fee?
There must be things I cannot easily do with freeware or open source, I'm sure. But the market is the market, why should anyone pay for something she desn't need? This person that paid for an expensive iPhone useless application comes to mind. Only if you are not thinking and have the money.
This brings me to my prediction on the future of Home Computing:
The Cloud will be very much populated, cheap connections to it will be all over the place. Communication companies will make money by providing seamlessly connections to it. There will be a few winner desktop environments. This last battle is between OS and Browser companies.
I will want a no hassle efficient desktop experience for my comunication gadget, this All Senses Human Interface (ASHI) will be part of me as my glasses are now; maybe hearing aid in a few years, if I don't take care of my ears properly.
My prediction of a Home Computer then, is an ASHI device, cheap, reliable and cool. Me and my Cloud; that is the life!
