The economist Brian Arthur has clarified the origin of technology in his book The Nature of Technology. I posted a note before, you can find it here.
Inspired by that, I propose that the "useless" parts of our genome, brain cortex, and the Universe: The Dark Materials, have the same origin, i.e. emergent purpose.
In the beginning the Universe didn't have a purpose, but as it got more and more parts working together, it found one.
I see a connection between Stephen Wolfram's A New Kind of Science, and the Wachowski brothers's Matrix Trilogy.
