Pachamama

Tomorrow is the second Sunday of May. According to an American tradition we celebrate Mother's Day. I do remember mine that died April 11 of this year. I was not next to her, in that difficult moment, I hope she was not too scared, I do know that her favorite song was "Thanks to Life" sung by Violeta Parra, that great Chilean woman.

I rather write about another mother. I learned through that other great woman, Amy Goodman, that by the way, recently lost her mother as well, that in Bolivia the original people from that land, that now rule their land through the steady and intelligent leadership of Evo Morlaes, celebrate the mother of us all, Mother Earth, Pachamama, in their language.

Here in Chilpancingo I see every year around this time, how the sky gets cloudy, not because of the rain, but because the original people from this land, also ask for rain, by burning the dry plants on land.  I am sure those particles help to condense water drops to make steam clouds, that eventually will give corn to my people around here. Problem is, that some of the Chilpangingo people are also planting marihuana, and that the method should be stopped, because the atmosphere cannot take more carbon. The life cycles of Pachamama, are being disrupted, and I am afraid that just like my own mother, the system may go so highwire, that we alll will lose the protection of our Great Mother: Mother Earth.
